In December 2017, the new tax law, commonly called the "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act," is the biggest federal tax law change in over 30 years. Most of the canges are effective for tax years beginning after December 31, 2017 (For your 2018 tax return.) Our program also compares 2019, with projected changes for 2020 returns, and how it may affect you and your taxes. We will be able to point this out to you. Again, it is only a projection of tax liability. Other factors may impact the net results. For instance, effective 01/01/2020, "The Secure Act", involving RMD's (Required Minimum Distributions / IRA's) was signed in December 2019. This change will impact many taxpayers and their IRA distributions. We can assist you on the explanation of this law and the impact on your tax return.
As many of you know, I have been in the tax preparation field for fifty years, since 1970. (I can't believe that number, but it speaks for itself !!!) Our business has grown over the years because of our many satisfied clients. We are a family business and very proud of our success. My daughter, Kristen, who has been doing tax returns over 25 years with me, is a tremendous asset for our firm. She is a graduate of Fairfield University and has her degree in Business Administration. Prior to her working in the tax business, she worked in Human Resources for several large firms in New York City. Many of you know Kristen, and how proud I am of her that she has developed excellent tax knowledge, from simple returns to complex ones. I am very happy that OUR business is a FAMILY business. We are now into fourth generation of clients; that itself, speaks wonders.
We are associated with the following professional organizations:
NSA.........National Society of Accountants
NATP.......National Association of Tax Professionals
NYSIA......New York State Society of Independent Accountants.
Each one of these organizations requires yearly minimum CPE credits to maintain current membership. This year, as in the past few years, it is required that all tax preparers be registered with the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS and NYS have issued testing procedures for all preparers. Each preparer is required to attend classes for a rquired amount of CPE credits each year. We have always received these credits, because of the requirements to be in the above organizations. Kristen and I will more than meet the IRS requirements this year and subsequent years. New York State has also instituted a yearly registration program, similar to the IRS. We both qualified as "Registered Tax Return Preparers" in 2012. Since then, the IRS has changed that designation into "Annual Filing Season Preparer". We both have those credentials, too, for 2019 tax season. You can find out further information about the AFSP program by checking www.irs.gov .
